EYFS Curriculum

Village Schools Federation EYFS Skills Progression

Our EYFS Skills Progression document supports high-quality teaching and learning throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is designed to ensure that children develop the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for future success through carefully planned, progressive learning experiences.

The document identifies the key skills children will work towards across all areas of learning, including communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development, literacy, mathematics and understanding the world. Skills are carefully sequenced so that learning builds progressively over time, allowing children to develop confidence, independence and deeper understanding.

Teachers use the Skills Progression document to inform their weekly and daily planning, ensuring that activities are purposeful, developmentally appropriate and tailored to meet the needs of individual children. It helps staff identify what children need to learn next and supports consistent expectations across the EYFS.

The document also ensures a balance between adult-directed teaching and child-initiated learning. Through high-quality interactions, play-based experiences and carefully planned environments, children are given opportunities to practise and apply their developing skills in meaningful contexts.

Our EYFS Skills Progression document is firmly rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and reflects our commitment to providing a nurturing, ambitious and engaging curriculum that supports every child to thrive.
